Brazing of inserts to punch tools

INDUCTION - Tools

Brazing carbide inserts on high-strength punch tools

How to ensure a strong and durable joint in punches through Induction brazing.

Induction brazing is an ideal solution for assembling punches with hard metal inserts. Hard metal punches are essential tools in many industrial sectors, where high precision and durability are required. Thanks to their unique characteristics, they ensure high quality in the finished product and greater efficiency in production processes.

Information about brazing hard metal inserts on punch tools

Induction brazing enables the creation of strong and durable joints without compromising the material’s properties, ensuring the longevity of the tools.

Equipments and materials used:

  • Generator used : Platinum HF3 (80%).
  • Heating time: 10,5 sec
  • Inductor used: single closed loop with internal diameter of 16.5 mm
  • Use of thermal camera to control temperature: setting at 650°C

Auxiliary materials:

  • Brazing alloy, in wire form with a diameter of 6 mm and silver diameter of 1.2 mm.
  • Flux BrazeTech H to prevent oxidation

Description of the process:

The tips of the punches were brazed using a Platinum HF3 high-frequency generator, operating at 80% of its 3 kW power capacity. A closed single-turn inductor with an internal diameter of ……

Here is an example process for a drill with a diameter of 9 mm and a carbide insert.

Process Details:

  • Generator: Platinum HF6 (50%)
  • Process Duration: 11.9 seconds
  • Inductor Used (N°1): Double turn with internal diameter 14 mm
  • Control temperature with thermal imaging camera: 750°C.
  • Thermal imaging camera: 50X50 mm window range 250°C-900°C

Auxiliary Materials:

Brazing Material: 40% silver alloy

Flux: in paste for high temperatures

Process Description:

The process begins with the careful placement of the 9mm bits and tips inside the loops of the inductor. The inductor allows uniform and controlled heating of the brazing area with power generated by the Platinum HF6 generator system with setting of 50% of power.

The temperature is brought and maintained at 750°C with a program lasting 12 seconds, optimizing the melting and penetration of the alloy by capillarity.  The thermal imaging camera, with its precise reading capability, ensures that the process remains within critical parameters.

By carefully controlling the heat, the risk of damaging the base material during the brazing process is reduced. This is especially important when working with steel tools that need to maintain their strength and hardness.
